As an ever restless soul, and after having been to over 15 countries, I’ve learnt a thing or two about what would make my life significantly better on the road. Travel accessories are often these small, shiny things you see in the airport shopping section before you fly out and some of these you don’t even know what to do with. Trust me when I say this, some of these travel accessories really can make your life SO much easier. I travel light and I prefer to travel cheap, but what I do not compromise on are what I’d like to call ‘travel productivity hacks’. I like to avoid problems while traveling as much as I can, and being a girl I think it’s always been a product of my subconscious upbringing.
Without further adieu, here’s my favourite travel accessories:
#1 Digital Luggage Checking Scale
I cannot tell you how many times I have tried to ‘guess’ how much my luggage weighs and how many times that has been wrong. No matter how many tricks you find to weigh your luggage before you fly, what it costs you to pay for those extra kilos time and again is way more than it would ever cost you to get a digital luggage checking scale. Be smart, and get your self one before your next trip.
#2 Passport Cover
Passports can be notoriously flimsy pieces of paper and yet possibly the most important thing to have on you while you travel. After spilling coffee once and losing my passport multiple times in my organized (or so I thought) carry-on, I decided to protect the one thing I cannot take an international flight without as best as I can. This magic little thing is called a passport cover or a passport holder. You can get a simple one or one that looks like it fell from heaven. Regardless, it will save your most precious document while traveling and we could all use a little bit of that.
#3 Travel Organizer
I don’t know about you, but I have very often lost my boarding passes or simply dropped some important booking confirmation I needed simply during transiting in my airport. Not to mention carrying 2 or 3 currencies and separating them can get exhausting real quick. I recently discovered (and I wish I had way earlier) a thing called a ‘travel organizer’. I am not the most organized person I know, but I’d rather have my life together on the road simply because the cost of losing something important is just too damn high. A travel organizer is essentially a glorified wallet that lets you keep all your papers, boarding passes, wallet, cards, currencies and small trinkets together in separate pockets. I traveled with one recently and I cannot recommend it more.
#4 Sleeping Mask
You know those annoying times when some one keeps switching on the lights in the hostel, plane or train. I absolutely cannot sleep with bright lights on, and prefer to carry a sleeping mask with me to ensure I have my beauty sleep. Its tough as it is to sleep well in a new bed or a new place, I want to make my rest time as peaceful as possible.
#5 Ear Plugs
Apart from wanting to sleep in the dark, I guess I am also ‘blessed’ with medium light sleeping. I’m not such a light sleeper that anything will wake me up, but I cannot get to sleep with any sort of sounds around. I need my peace and quiet especially to fall asleep and when I wake up. If there is ONE thing you will never leave home without, its good ear plugs. Whether its crying kids on the plane, snoring dorm mates or any other random noise you’d like to drown, ear plugs are the way to go!
PRO TIP- Always carry a few extra pairs. They are also incredibly easy to lose!
#6 Bluetooth Earphones
I don’t know about you, but I spend like 15 minutes untangling my regular set of ear phones. This is where technology can be REALLY helpful. Earphones or Headphones, take your pick. But wireless and bluetooth enabled, they shall be.
#7 Universal Adaptor
What’s more annoying that not having an important gadget with you, is not being able to use it due to a stupid little thing called an “Adaptor Plug”. Often forgotten, this little thing has saved my forgetful a** more times than I can remember. Now, I pack this first before I pack any other electronic gadgets.
#8 Power Bank
Have you ever taken so many photos or videos that you find yourself at the best moment, completely out of battery? Guilty, as charged. I’ve learnt my lesson the hard way after some 5 odd years of grown-up travel. Carry a power bank with you, you never know how much you will need it, until you undoubtedly will.
#9 Toiletries Organizer
I honestly stumbled upon this just about two years ago. When I started flying regularly within Europe only with a carry on and realized how annoying it was to separate my 100 ML bottles neatly in a visible organizer so I’d save a ton of time while doing security. Not to mention, this has saved me plenty of times while living in a hostel where you have to carry your toiletries in and out each time. You want them all, neatly or dirtily, in one damn place.
#10 Luggage Locks
I guess this one from all the travel accessories I mentioned should be quite self-explanatory indeed. What’s good is your travel if you lose something important along the way. Whether to safely secure your baggage while in a hostel or hotel or just to have an extra lock incase your main lock breaks, keep one and you’ll feel much the better for it. It’s not always easy to find one in a new country, not to mention you’ll possibly spend more money and waste precious time looking for a lock that you could have spent actually visiting a legit place.
I know it can be annoying to carry a ton of travel accessories with you. But what’s even more annoying is compromising on your security, comfort or safety. Be smart, be thrifty and be safe.

I feel so under prepared reading this list! I’ve done some travel within the US but not much international travel, so I guess I’ll need to check some of these things out when I do get the opportunity to travel abroad.

I think one can never be entirely prepared to travel to new lands or go through unexpected situations, but it always helps to be prepared. Happy and safe travels to you too! 🙂

This is a good list! Weird thing about my ears is that when I try to use ear plugs they pop out on their own …
